MRT — The Cheapest Option
The MRT Changi Airport station connects directly to the city via the East-West Line. A journey to the city centre costs approximately SGD 2–3 and takes 30–45 minutes depending on your destination. Where it falls short: for families with checked luggage, elderly passengers, or anyone arriving after midnight (last train around 11:30pm), the MRT becomes a poor choice fast.
Taxi — Variable and Surcharge-Heavy
Taxis from Changi Airport use metered fares with a mandatory airport surcharge of SGD 5. Additional surcharges apply during peak hours (25% on top of the metered fare from 6–9:30am and 6–11pm on weekdays), public holidays (10%), and midnight to 5:59am (50%). A typical metered journey to Orchard Road runs SGD 25–35 before surcharges — expect SGD 35–55 depending on time of day.
Grab — Convenient but Variable
Grab is widely available at Changi Airport and offers transparent upfront pricing. Standard GrabCar to most city destinations runs SGD 20–35 off-peak. The problem is surge pricing during peak arrival times — particularly Friday evenings, public holidays, and late-night flights — which can push fares to SGD 50–70+ for the same journey. GrabCar capacity also limits you to 4 passengers and 2–3 bags comfortably.
Private Transfer — Fixed, No Surprises
